Today my little triangle lights up red and get the message power service required. the battery icon was also lit up. multi meter across battery terminals 12.6 volts start car and goes up to 14volt so I assume alternator is ok battery is 6 months old.
Any ideas please.

Hi.
I had the same thing sometime back.
It was the alternator brushes . Although the service wear limit is 8mm - 10mm
approx. (if I remember right) mine measured 12mm and 15mm. Yet the car ran fine and the battery charged I kept having that warning.
So, rather than spend on a new alternator I purchased new slip-rings and regulator/rectifier pack.

How many miles on the car? Did the light came on intermittently ? Also look for corrosion and cracked power cables.

The brushes are inside the regulator, so the regulator can be replaced (don't use chinese ones). Careful when ordering, about 2005 and up have a different regulator. Some aftermarket ones came with awful female torx screws but most have standard philips screws only these get stuck in there so easy to round - put force and go very slowly with the screw driver.
