Question XC60 steering whee buttons

Morning all and happy new year

A quick and potentially stupid question. I have a MY2020 XC60 Momentum Pro. On the left hand side of the steering whee there are two buttons with two dashes on the top and three at the bottom. What do they do?!? I don’t have the extra driving aids fitted so apart from the pro pack and a reversing camera the car is standard spec. Seems odd that Volvo would not have blanked these off if they didn’t do anything.

Thanks!

Even when not using adaptive cruise or pilot assist these buttons can be used to set a distance warning (red lights at the bottom of the windscreen) to warn if you are too close to the vehicle in front. At faster speeds increase the number of bars and reduce them at slower speeds if warnings are coming on with too soon.

Any idea how to turn this on? I’ve read the manual and I’m at a loss. Thanks.

The information you have quoted is wrong. It is valid only for NON SPA cars, which have adaptive cruise control.
On the SPA cars you have a flashing red car in the driver's display in situations when you approaching a vehicle, bicycle, human or big animals and the car think you are going to hit them. It is called Collision Avoidance System. It is part of IntelliSafe.

I am not sure if all cars have this distance warning in the windscreen but Its always on if you have the safety feature and the icons are green in the Sensus safety page, (swipe screen to the left) turn on features by touching icons. If you have this, when you press the steering wheel bar buttons you will see the distance bars increase or decrease in the bottom left of the drivers display.
You will also see these bars increase or decrease if you are using adaptive cruise or pilot assist to set the distance between you and the car in front.
