Not one to doubt their wisdom, but Auto Express definitely mentions the 3rd generation. In fairness it would be about 7-8 years since the launch of the current XC90 so fairly plausible given the lifecycle of most car models, even if the 1st gen trundled on for about 12 years or so.

woooot? mild refresh?
The platform will change so it cannot be a mild refresh. Never heard of a mild refresh on a car that changed platforms.

Dealers are the last to know anything, well anything they will tell you if they think you would hold out from buying a car now.

I would have thought T8s will have a substantial change around 2020, certainly in the battery department to get the range up.

Just discussed yesterday with my dealer about future XC90. My 2019 XC90 coming next month and told him that in 4 years, when the warranty is over, I might change that one for new XC90, expecting a new generation then. But he told me that maximum there will be a facelift. No reason to bull**** me, just bought a car from him. But more I think he does not know and I do not believe him, I also think there will be a new generation in 4 years (latest).

New XC90 in 2021 or 2022 according to these sites and only available in hybrid or all-electric variants. Diesel option dropped completely.

An all-electric XC90 would definitely require an updated platform.

EDIT: If the above is accurate there could be a facelift of the existing car for the 2020 model year commencing May 2019.

These are consistent with the interview from a Volvo exec here: https://www.just-auto.com/interview/..._id186803.aspx the whole spa platform is to be replaced in 2-3 years. It makes sense for the XC90 to be the first replaced, its the flagship and the oldest now the V40 has been phased out.
