juddering when turning right - low speed
Hi all,
I have a 1996 850 estate 2.5 petrol. During lockdown its been sat unused for a couple of months, and since driving it again it has developed a weird juddering noise when turning right (only right) at slow speeds - e.g. you pull up to a junction and angle the wheels right as if to pull away again, will also do it when parking. Doesn't feel like anything is rubbing or scraping, but I can feel the judder through the brake pedal for less than half a second before it is fine. The noise sounds like its coming from the driver side front wheel. Before I start crawling round on my hands and knees, does anyone have any ideas? |

Quite likely your CV joint. They usually do that very thing! Can be a right pain to sort out, but very satisfying when finished. These joints can be as little as £25 delivered nowadays. Unbelievable prices for the complexity of them.

Done some further investigation - been for a drive - the noise won't happen turning lock to lock on steering, won't happen when braking, won't happen when steering whilst moving. It will only happen when going slow (10-20mph) with the brake applied and the wheel turning right (but hardly turning at all, more slightly turned as if you'about to pull out rather than anything like full lock).... also can feel the sensation (whether it be described as a knock or a judder or a rubbing noise) through the brake pedal!

A few threads on here about a very similar sounding issue on x70s, the abs ecu is commonly blamed but a few are down to the abs sensor at the wheel not seated properly or tone ring degrading. Turning at low speeds somehow tricks the computer into thinking you are skidding, pulsing sensation in the brake pedal is the computer modulating the brakes trying to control the skid. Maybe.
