Default Under Glove Box Trim Panel ....

On my 'new' 1998 V70 T5 auto the trim panel under the glove box has partially given up the ghost. I guess too many knees have hit it over the years.

The three plastic screw securing tabs/brackets at the front leading edge of the panel that appear to fit up under the trim below the front of the glove box have snapped off. The trim flops down being held somewhere at the back to prevent the whole panel falling into the passenger footwell. I guess from the looks of it that there are some holding screws at the back edge of the panel that are holding it up.

If I open the glove box door and remove the box itself I assume that once I have refurbished the tabs that I can re-secure the trim panel in it's proper place? As a safety point should I disconnect the battery to avoid accidentally arming the srs?

Cheers, Bob

As it doesn't seem that anyone here has had experience of this I just searched YouTube and found one of Robert's many useful Volvo video tips covering a wide variety of models one of which happened to be on the precise subject.

Don't know why I didn't think of it before: https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q...6FORM%3DVDVVXX

Just read your post and was going to suggest you check Roberts videos - I was watching his heater matrix replacement one last night and it included removing those panels.

Default Same problem

The same thing has happened to me today.
Drove over a bump and the panel under the glove box fell off only hanging by the wire for the foot well light.
Both of the brackets have broken so I guess it was just hanging by the central clip.
Has anyone had a go at repairing the brackets so it can be properly reattached?

The same thing happened to me too just last Monday. I've spent a week thinking about how to fix it before asking for suggestions.

So on closer inspection, the tops of the securing tabs have broken off above the screw holes. Removing the glovebox was straightforward and it ws then easy to see how it all should fit together. Since my V70 doesn't have a passenger airbag, this was one less thing to worry about.

I've tried taking a piece of thin metal strip, drilling a hole through it and putting a 30 degree bend in it just below the hole and mounting this on top of the securing tabs so that it follows their contour in the hope that this will hold the remains of the tab in place. I've also used some double sided adhesive tape on the centre tabs where there is a nice flat surface to stick it to. Hopefully this will work until I can think of something better.

On the plus side, when the thing fell off, some of the annoying squeaks and rattles stopped!

I can't recall whether these panels are plastic or fibre based.

If plastic, then I'd suggest using Martins approach, but also drill some holes in the metal plate and then use a soldering iron to melt some plastic through the holes to form a plastic 'rivet'.

I've found nylon zip ties make a good 'filler rod' for this, but it depends upon the type of plastic that you're trying to weld of course - the zip ties work well on bumpers for example.

To stop the creaks and rattles, put some thin felt along the areas where the two panels meet - you can get some from a craft shop like HobbyCraft. I've done this a few times with a squeaky dash top and its worked perfectly

If you get a tailgate trim repair kit like this one from PFS it includes metal tabs to replace the broken plastic tabs and little self tappers to secure them, I don't think there's an underdash repair kit but I have in the past made similar plates by cutting up a biscuit tin, I did it with a metal tin and tiny pop rivets but there may be some scope for using one of those modern plastic ones and Rolling Thunder's welding technique.
