440 turbo gearbox help
i have a 1989 440 turbo 1721cc the gearbox is leaking from the left hand seal in the hanes manual it only says you can replace the right hand side?
is it possible to fit a gearbox from a later car ie 1.8 2.0 ect or has it got to be from a 440 turbo |

The left hand seal is the inner driveshaft boot it seals the gear oil too . A Kit is available from the dealer . The 440 tyurbo box is re-enforced having taper roller bearings instead of normal ball bearings so best stick with it , Volvo did that for a reason ..

Not that common but sometimes happens on a randon car .. never twice on the same car!
You have to take the drive shaft off and gently press off the boot , it has a rotating bearing/seal on the small end . This has to be gently tapped back on with a tube of the appropriate diameter about 30 mm or so .. If you drain the oil you can re use it . The oil is fully synthetic so wont degrade . The only oil i'd use it the correct Volvo part number , volvo dont list a type/grade just a part number it is fairy expensive but the best you can get . I have had a few cases of a gear( first or second ) simply not engaging due to syncro cones , but changed the oil and this completely cured the problem . It seems water sometimes gets in the box if it goes through wet lanes or floods a lot and upsets the friction qualities of the syncro cones ..
