I wasn't suggesting you were Andrew, just trying to give a broader perspective on the whole "what's fashionable at the shows" idea. It could also be a regional thing, steam appears to be more popular round this neck of the woods than it was down south. Whether i'm right or wrong i genuinely don't know, just saying it as i see it round here.

No matter where you are, the "dad had" stuff will always be the most prevalent i think because as people grow older, instead of an 80 kids growing up and saying "dad had a Cortina", the Millennials kid will grow up saying "dad had a Mondeo/Sierra" so will want to see preserved examples of those and similar.

It's a constantly evolving thing with a few bits that will always be there as long as people preserve them. Back in the 70s steam traction engines were no more than scrap metal and now they're £100+k because people have realised they're worth preserving and are sold by the ounce.

I gave up trying to work it out, i once had the theory 122s were 4 door and 121s were two-door but your theory (based i guess on observation like me) is the exact opposite and it seems neither of us were correct. Maybe there's an explanation somewhere on the forum about the 120 series model numbers, i think there's one for the 140/240 series before they dropped the last digit denoting the number of doors.

Have a look at that Andrew, it's a pdf attachment, it sort of explains the model numbering system.

As for 1990s cars never being eligible for Historic status, imagine for a moment we are in 2002 instead of 2022. Would you say the same about 1970s cars in that case? That would completely eliminate the RB from ever becoming Historic if so.
However i do take your point that most 1990s-on cars aren't that interesting and (presently at least) not really worth saving. We said the same 20 years ago about 1970s cars though.

I think this is something that is difficult for many people to agree on and even many insurers are still undecided about what constitutes a classic in 1990s cars.
My view here is entirely subjective Dave - based on no objective argument at all. I understand why the government is happy to encourage cars with an historic interest to be maintained at private expense by giving a bit of a tax concession. Entirely subjectively I think there is merit in 1960s and 70s vehicles (the RB was made in August 1979) being included because there aren't many survivors - apart from falling as a result of write-off accidents and scrappage schemes they weren't well protected against the rust in those days. After about 1985 motor cars became full of computers and emissions equipment, and were much better protected against rusting.

I can't imagine that a 1990s car like a Ford Mondeo will ever be interesting enough to encourage keeping on the road via a tax concession - it would just be a cheap way of running a commuter. Now, this bit will be heresy in these pages: I think the same thing applies to 240s made after (about) 1984.

Is this me pulling up the ladder after I've got through the hatch? Yes, it is (and no apology for that). The thing that will kill the rolling 40 year old historic taxation class will be people driving 12,000 miles/year in their late model 240/Astra/Golf or similar.

Just my thoughts - I'm not trying to convince anyone this is right or wrong (but I'm happy with the RB and Great Aunt Maud).

:-)

See the RB thread Andrew, it is a 122.

I'll collect the car tomorrow, and over the weekend I'll start a thread in the 1800 section - but today the 200 series section has a preview :-)
