Spline sleeve replacement

Its a bit of a long shot but is there anyone local to us on the N Yorks/Cumbria/Lancs border, LA10, that has used a garage anywhere near that they would recommend to replace the spline sleeve to try to get the AWD working again on a 2005 XC90?

Tried our local and he isn't interested, he says try the Volvo dealership.

Are you sure the issue is the splined sleeve? The problem was fixed by MY2005.

I would say it is most likely the spline sleeve. Prop spins freely in park, no drive at all behind, no strange noises and no warning lights.

If you have a 163 BHP engine car (black engine cover, not grey) then most likely splined sleeve failure. MY 2005 was the last year of production.

Actually to be more specific - if you have the 5-speed AW55 auto (not the later 6-speed TF80) - those are the affected cars.

That does sound like a splined sleeve.

Mine is a 55 plate 163bhp auto.

Hi, best to replace sooner rather than later as a slipping spline can also wear the input to the transfer box. This happened on mine (my03).

The genuine Volvo replacement I understand is a stronger unit and includes two oil seals and retaining clip.

I suggest it may be wise to line up a potential transfer box too.

I recon most earlier models of XC90 will have this same fault if not already fixed and the owners blissfully unaware!

It's worth noting that the Volvo kit of parts referred to by John is cheaper than buying the sleeve alone.... strangely.

Did you find out what the problem was?
I also have a 2005 with a freely spinning prop, I have managed to get the money together to replace the transfer box as I am told that the input shaft splines are made of butter, but now I have been told that the output shaft splines on the gearbox could also have been damaged (this is pre-opening it up and having a look) this they say can cause a major problem in putting it back together when opened to have a look if not repaired, the problem for me is that I will be taking the car halfway across the country to get it seen to, and I am stuffed if they can't get it back together.
