Also, for the sake of the AWD angle-drive/bevel gear, keep the tyre pressures the same all round. If running on 17" (215/45/17 91W) then 36psi works well. You must also keep the tread depth within 2mm. This is not difficult as the wear is very even, but it does mean changing all 4 tyres is you have an unrepairable puncture with tread depth below 6mm. Don't want to scare you, but knowledge like this reminds me to avoid the potholes. Lots of mod advice on here too. First mod should be the strut brace, if not done already. Then switch to Shell V power - stick with it for a few tanks if you're not running it already, as it will clean out the engine. The extra power is fab. Happy motoring Oli

Hi Oli,
Thanks for the info, this is my first R, but apart from an expensive 12 months of Audi ownership I've always had Volvo's, inc two 440 turbos, it's nice to be back behind the wheel of a Wolf in Sheep's clothing! I think I've managed to cover most bases with the car, I'd been looking for one for about 2 years, originally looking for a phase 1 FWD manual in saffron (with the aim of avoiding the awd snags). but when i started doing the research and realized that there's nothing to fear as long as you follow the guidelines you mentioned, i decided to try to find a decent awd. I eventually got this one the second time it was sold this year! I walked away from it at a garage in may as we couldn't agree a price. It then cropped up privately in September and i knew i had to have it! As for the cam belt, although the service book had been stamped by a previous (non Volvo) dealer, it didn't look quite as new as i would have expected, and the aux belt was cracked so it was straight to the local dealer for a "repeat" 90k service. I've also taken out a full warranty that covers the entire drive train as well as the usual stuff with a claims limit set at the value of the car! As for the fuel, I've been running 98 / 99 ron of which ever brand is nearest when the light comes on! I'll give the V power a go and see what happens. I've been keeping a watch on the fuel econ against fuel types, and initial results support the case for high octane. on the few occasions I've used 95 ron I reckon I've seen a significant drop in economy (as much as 4mpg)! The fuel economy isn't a concern, but its nice to know the engine is being looked after. As for mods, i intend to keep it simple, hopefully the new year will bring a stut brace, '04 C70 front end and possibly Rica or BSR! Thanks for the welcome and advice. Ade. |

Ade,
Thanks for the reply, glad you had your eyes open when buying. I didn't, but thanks to this site I'm well informed now. I bought mine from a dealer and have had them work on the Angle drive several times under warranty. They've been good as gold in taking full responsibility for making it good, and am pretty sure it's fine now. However, they'll be checking it every time I take it in (or happen to be driving by). I hope you'll enjoy the car as much as I do. A BSR or similar (MTE are popular on here) is on my shopping list too, along with new bushes and mounts, police spec pads and a full valet. Look forward to seeing some pics. Welcome to T5er and another R too. Oli
