Default Steering rack replacement - any "how to"?

Hi,

I am going to replace the steering rack on a friends V70 -2001. Are there any how to for this on this forum? Does this job involve lowering of the subframe?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

P.S.

What kind of fluid shall I use on when refilling the system after replacement? The autodata only specifies "Volvo ATF"

Yes the subframe needs to be dropped and make sure you got a friend handy! It is not a job is like to do again but perfectly do able if your mechanically competent and have enough patience!

Took me about 6 - 8 hours start to finish, check the tracking measurements before fitting (saves it being miles out once fitted) oh and check which inner tie rods are better as they are easier to change when the rack is off the car than on!
I used Volvo steering fluid too, cheap from swansea frf andthen you know its right.

Last thing, make sure you get new o rings for where the pipes meet the rack and don't cross thread them ...easily done!

Thanks for answer

I guess a servo-oil named/specification CHF 11S would be sufficient??

Please dont risk dot 4 in your Power steering system!!!!!

Im pretty sure it wont it any good as im sure brake fluid is of a different grade and not supposed to be used in the power steering system at all due to its corrosive nature and very prone to damaging o-rings? (i await to be corrected)

Volvo power steering fluid is cheap enough and is the exact grade recommended by Volvo themselves, theres no questioning you've got the right stuff then if it comes from volvo themselves (badged at least).

Think i paid around £13 for a liter last jan from frf Swansea (with the discount) and that seemed to be enough.

I did the rack on my old 850 a couple of times and you I reckon it will be very similar to the P2 V70. You don't have to completely drop the subrame but loosen the front bolts off and remove the rear ones. Support the engine btw and then wangle the rack out of the gap. That all sounds fairly easy but it does take a while to get all the other bits out of the way to get to that stage. A Haynes manual would be your best starting point. One mention of steering racks and I always promote fitting an in-line fluid filter to remove all the swarf and shreddies that eat your rubber seals and pistons.
