Power tailgate issue

Hi all

I have a 2014 V70 with power tailgate, over past maybe 2 weeks, when it has been opening, it would drop slightly when it reached fully open. It only drops a few inch, enough for me to bang my head.

Is the system hydraulic? As yesterday I noticed, with what I am calling the curved hinges were wet with a oily substance. So I am thinking that something has burst in there.

If it is not hydraulic then any thoughts on what it could be, never noticed the wetness before hence my thought process.

Tailgate is electrically operated. Try pushing the gate back up to the fully open position and then holding the operating button for about 10 seconds. That should reset the full open position. Can't say what the wetness might be.

This should be on page 60 of your owner's manual

Sorry for missing the gas strut fault possibility. As usual VolvoSweden videos are great, especially the Russian accents! However, before dismantling anything, try the reset procedure as I have had the hatch not open fully and resetting cured the problem.

While your at it with the lubrication give the handle hinges and mechanism a good spray of something cleaning then slippery. The bad weather/ salt gets flicked up the rear of the handle / hatch and makes the mechanism stick a bit.

Thanks all, will try the reset tomorrow.

It does not happen all the time, tonight when I went in the boot the boot lid went all the way up and stayed up, no sagging.

The struts that are hidden under the headlining are worn out and the only way to fix it is to change them for new ones which isn’t ‘that’ difficult and there is a guide on YouTube by VolvoSweden who has replaced his for new. You will need to get your part numbers because there is 2 different versions I believe. The wetness you’re seeing is fluid leaking out of them and it will end up staining the headlining in the boot area.
