Default Volvo 960 Mk2 1995 - issue

Hi

Problem described in below youtoob video. All fluids are at the correct level.

I will refrain from adding any speculation because I feel like that contaminates other peoples ideas/instincts.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfebaLzvG3U

Any ideas?

P.S. no, i do not dry steer, but it was the safest and most effective way of demonstrating the issue.

Got to be the power steering pump surely?

The PAS pump is cavitating. Low or old, thin fluid.

Either way, get yourself a 100-250ml syringe and use it to suck the fluid out of the reservoir. Discharge it into something white like an old Pot Noodle pot that you've washed out. Any similar white plastic tub will do.
Then when it has settled, inspect it for contamination.

Back under the bonnet, top up with fresh fluid (i use Carlube ATF-U), start the engine and turn the wheel slowly from lock to lock several times and then back to the center. Check/top-up the level, repeat a week later and weekly after until the fluid coming out is as clean as it went in, usually 3-4 weeks. Then repeat yearly.

Also check your PAs drive belt for tension and general condition, it could be slipping but that normally comes with a squeal too.

That should sort it out for you

Thanks - I suspected it was pump-related. When I collected the car (it was dead on a farm for a few years) the previous owner said the pump was bad, i filled it with fresh fluid and it has been fine since, apart from the last week or so. The accessory belt is a little over one year old and still looks fine.

Just before filming that video, i did put about 50ml of fresh ATF in there. That was last night, and this morning I can't replicate the problem. So it sounds promising! I have another pump in the 'parts bin' anyway but I will slurp out all the old stuff and replace with new as you suggest.

Thank you

When the power steering pump on my old 300,000-mile V70 started to get noisy I dropped in some Lucas Power Steering Conditioner fluid. It did work, the pump was silenced and the car went on to cover many more trouble-free miles. The Lucas product costs about a tenner for a bottle. You may have to search around - not all motor shops and factors sell it.

It's good stuff but i'd suggest clean, fresh fluid to start with then add the Lucas stuff after.
