hi everybody hopeyou are all ok. you will find the centre console panel prises out if you use a thin screwdriver at one end. they can be stuck in if it hasn't been out before but it will be ok once it moves. it is held in by two s profile clips abit like speed clips.
the switch comes out from the underside .
also , you csn purchase a switch to disarm the ultrasonics from your local dealer if you have the early alarm system (up to my 1999inc).
this is part number 30852101 and will cost you £11.00 inc vat. it is simple to fit and will disable the sensors for one cycle. do not however fit it where the instructions suggest as the back of the switch will hit the steering column underside. fit it over to one side of the lower cowling and make sure it has sufficient clearence behind it.
hope this helps, jamie.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I'll give them a try soon.
Now, has anyone tried to raise the front passenger seat? It doesn't look to be an obvious procedure - even the driver's manual suggests consulting a Volvo dealer. I await with bated (baited?) breath. Cheers.

Thanks for the offer, Scott - I've ordered a manual already and should get it next Monday.
