Rear diff and transfer box oils
Hi all haldex changed. Next up is an oil change for the rear diff and transfer box.
Volvo quoted nearly £50 for two litres of oil, with the part no for both changing to the same volvo code. GL-5 SAE 75w90 seems to be the spec now for both front and rear. Anyone recommend non volvo oil manufacturers that you have used?

I changed all 4 transmission oils on my 2004 awd v70R about 2 yrs ago. 4 different oil's. Most are once in a ownership so used genuine volvo got good dealer discount. If your dealer won't play ball try the Swansea lads who give forum members discount.
Bevel gear : SAE75W-90 API GL5 part no. 31259380. Rear different : SAE80W API GL5 part no. 1161620. Cheers Bob. |

I’ve also been getting a bit confused by this situation.. I bought some Liqui Moly 80w for the rear diff, this being a mineral oil. On my hunt for bevel oil, I’ve found the Volvo number Bob quotes above - this is now seemingly also used as diff oil. Is the official Volvo stuff mineral or synthetic?

Looks like rationalisation. The specs look fairly similar, the no longer used oil being a single grade oil, the used a multigrade (75-90) oil..
Can't see it making a hill of beans difference to be honest. Cheers Bob |

2003 V70 2.5T AWD transfer box/bevel gear and rear diff oils
Just had same issue of disagreement on which oil to use. Most non Volvo garages still have old spec for the 2003-2008 AWD models which specs different oils at both ends of the rear drive shaft. Volvo now supply same oil for both ends. Part no 31259380. This is an API GL5 75W-90 oil and same as the original spec for the front transfer box/bevel gear. Don't get put off by the label on the bottle which says for use in bevel gears on all AWD models post 2013 and does not give any indication of the oil grade or viscosity. Very helpful Volvo !
