Default Ceramic coating anyone?..

Contemplating doing it - mainly because standard wax I use gets washed off quickly in winter. I'd like to hear some experiences, brand recommendations, tips, etc.

Cheers

I’ve had the ceramic (Gen 3 glasscoat) applied to the current and previous cars straight from dealer.

Now a dealer is never going to do anywhere near as good a job as a proper detailer. Though a detailer will prob cost twice the cost.

But it really does make a big difference for someone who tries to wash their car as infrequently as possible. Every time it rains it just mostly cleans itself like magic.

Might be something worth trying to negotiate as a freebie on a new car.

I did have some cled in a car park ding my car with their door recently. The ceramic does make any repairs a bit more complicated though.

I was thinking more in the DIY sense.. The car is now 3 yrs old - no freebies from the dealer or anyone else for that matter And from looking at application videos - there's really not much to it..

Btw, why do you say that it makes repairs more complicated?

I brought a 69 v90cc in black back in October. I immediately washed it and used autobrite magiseal ceramic coat. Lasts 2-6 months. So far it’s brilliant. Wash
Mine weekly and it’s still really clean and water beads off.

I’d upload photos, but this website keeps saying failed, maybe photo size

Had my V90 R Design done last year by a pro detailer. £250 admittedly it was mates rates. He used G Techniq products, and the finish was outstanding, well worth the money. Regarding causing problems with paint repairs that may be needed after a ceramic coat, I think it may have to do with blending in the new paint with the surrounding area. At the beginning of this year I was side swiped by an Audi driver, who managed to take out both driver side doors. Mentioned the ceramic coating to the body shop and was told not a real problem for them.

Application of a proper Ceramic coating in itself isnt too difficult, the main part that costs the most money is the preparation of the paintwork prior to applying the coating.
If the paintwork isnt correctly prepared, all you do is seal in all whatever badness hasnt been removed. Thats the reason why I would never have any coating applied by a dealership as they never spend much time preparing.
With your paintwork being 3 years old now, carrying out a 2 or 3 stage paint correction and decontamination would be highly recommended before applying anything.
As for products, I have Carpro CQuartz 3.0 on my Volvo and Matrix Black on my other car. Both are really good but I think the Matrix coating gives a better overall finish and depth.

For a DIY application you'll do well to find anything easier to apply, or with better performance, than Gyeon CanCoat - have a search on Detailing World for it, you'll get loads of good advice there.

I've bought a can and will be applying it in a few weeks' time once I'm back home and have the right weather.

I’ve applied CanCoat a couple of months ago - so far so good. Relatively straight forward, just take care with the following:
  • prepare carefully with Q2M Prep.
  • avoid overspray when putting on the microfibre.
  • protect until it has cured.

I had it done by dealer (yes, I know!), but they made an absolute pigs ear out of it. Car is covered in swirl marks which I only noticed on the first sunny day after taking delivery. It's like it has been polished with a Brillo pad!

Complained to dealer principal (who I was already in touch with due to other delivery related issues), and took it in for him to see. He agreed it was a mess and said he didn't know if they had washed it badly and sealed the scratches in or applied the coating badly and made it look like swirl marks.

I washed my last car every weekend for 3 years and hadn't got a single swirl mark in it. Dealer washed it once and ruined it.

They promised to rectify it - they seem to think removing coating (which I didn't could be done) and buffing then re-applying would solve it, but then the first lockdown put a stop to it.

I need to book it in to get it sorted at some point. Next car I'll get it done by a detailer.
