I'm 100% with you on this. I've been looking into the start/stop issue as my new XC90 arrives on Wednesday and the stop/start system on my current Touareg has been a huge PITA for the last three years. I was hoping there might be some way of permanently switch it off on the XC90.

You said "turn it off", is it something which can be done permanently through the cars systems or maybe with a plug-in module?

Nope, not possible. It can only be disabled temporarily.

Is it done with the press of a button or is it more involved?

There's no dedicated physical button but there are several ways of doing it. For example, if you select Dynamic Drive Mode, stop/start is automatically disabled. You can also (I think) deselect it from your Individual Drive Mode options. However, the car always starts in Comfort mode so other drive modes have to be manually selected but that's not a biggie. You can also switch it off by swiping left on the main screen and hitting the on-screen stop/start button. Stop/start is also automatically disabled if Pilot Assist is operational. In any case there are multiple dependencies (temperature, battery charge, incline steepness, previous operations of it, etc) which determine whether or not it will actually engage so quite often, especially in winter, it doesn't.

I actually don't mind the stop/start function.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I detested it in my Touareg because it would cut in before the car stop rolling meaning the power steering had no power so became seriously heavy. VW admitted it wasn't right but said there was nothing they could do about it. I'm hoping the system in the XC90 is a lot more refined then I'll probably just accept it.

The power steering on the new spa cars are electric so that wont be a problem now.

Swipe right to get to the screen at left?

Yes, or is it no? Alternatively, with the car pointing north swipe westwards to get the easterly screen or if facing south swipe eastwards to get the westerly screen. I hope that clears up any confusion.
