Default what designates a T5

Hi All,
I'm relitivly new to Volvos in such a way that I am trying to find out, WHAT DENOTES A T5 ?
ie:

I've got a 2004 C70 2.4 T (low press) 200BHP GT. (5 cyl)
My 1999 S80 2.4 N/A (170 BHP) also 5 cyl
Other 2000 S80 2.9 N/A 210 BHP (6 cyl)

Engine Nos are

2.4 (170bhp) B5244S
2.4T (200bhp) B5244T7
2.9 (210bhp) B6294S

The C70 Coupe did the following engines between 1998-2002:
98-
B5204T2
B5204T3
B5234T3
B5254T

99- same +
B5204T4
B5254S Denso
B5254T

2000- Same +
B5244S
B5244T

C70 Convertable
2003 - 2005
B5234T9
B5244T7

BUT THIS WHERE I COME UNSTUCK.

Up until 2004 the only engine I could find designated with a T5 was a
B5204T5
Found in 850s and V70s.

THEN IN 2005
The V70 came with, (not only)
B5204T5
but a,
B5244T5.

SO I do not know what denotes the T5 stature. all I can assume it must be the 240 BHP.

I know that the 2.3 T (High press) 5 cyl, is 240BHP

BUT THEN !!!

Vadis Claims that the B5234T Has a max output of 225bhp and Torque of 300nm, and is Therefore ,
THE HIGHEST PERFORMANCE ENGINE EVER PRODUCED BY VOLVO....

AAARRRGGGGGHHHHH

Somebody please explain.......what denotes a T5.....and how ??

Joe.

Now I could be wrong here, as it's the T4 from the S40 range I'm familiar with, but I think your interpretation of the engine coding is incorrect.

The T* number at the end, has nothing to do with the model, it is merely a reference to what incarnation of a particular engine/model that you have, and that it is a turbo, hence the "T".

Thus the B5204T5 engine derivative you list is not anything to do with a T5. If the engine naming follows the same protocol as the S40's, then that engine is;

B standing for Benzine (petrol), as opposed to D for diesel.
The first "5" designates the number of cylinders
The next two digits designate the engine size (in this instance 2.0 litres)
The next digit refers to the number of valves per cylinder (in this case 4).

As I said, the T5 in this instance, means that it is the fifth incarnation of the 2.0litre 5 cylinder petrol turbo engine.

Like I say, that's how it works on the S40 - hence my engine is B4194T2 - you can work out what configuration engine that is!!

Now I wait to be proven wrong.....

Cheers

Thanks,
yeh I got all that, I know mine is, as you say Petrol 5 cyl 2.4cc 20 valve Turbo.
But as you have just explained the 7 that comes after the T in my engine number (B5244T7) denotes what version of that same engine it is.

What I am trying to understand is what gives the T5 designation IE an
850-T5.

Is it the fact that they had the smaller capacity engine 2.3cc with a high press turbo giving 240bhp ?

One of the reasons behind my enquiry is,
I saw for sale a set of pistons advertised as bought for a Volvo 2.4 T5.
Which I thought was incorrect. (I presumed ALL T5s are 2.3T)
The gentlemans way of thinking was that they were for the 5 cyl turbo, hence T5.

So I ask once again, What makes an 850-T5 / V70-T5, ect a T5 ??

Hope I havent confused anyone.
Joe.

IIRC the T-5 engine is designated 5234T

5 = 5 cylinders

23 for 2.3 ltrs

4 = 4 valves per cylinder

T for Turbo (as mentioned)

850-T5's were originally 225BHP (later V70 & S70 variants may have a smidge more, not sure).

850T-5R arrived soon after this & came with 250BHP on tap.

PS, yours is a later engine variant & not a T-5, again IIRC. Someone will confirm (or otherwise) my thoughts soon

The facelifted V70's and S60's 2004ish on had a 2.4 litre T5 engine-as you say with a high pressure turbo. Output was about 265bhp

Hi, the letter and number at the end of the engine number:
B5204T2
B5204T3
B5234T3
B5254T

Apart from one example do not directly relate to the name of the T5 engine (however, there is an engine number ending in T5 (850 T-5R or 850R? - I can't remember) , that is what is confusing you. My S70R engine number ends in T4. In the case of the 850 and Classic 70 Series a high pressure five cylinder turbo engine is a T5 or R engine where a low-pressure five cylinder is not.

Please can this thread be moved as the purpose of the thread is to function as a register.

IC,
One of the reasons for the post was to find out if I had a T5 !!! as I was confused. if I had then I would indeed register,
But as it appears I've only a low preasured 2.4 T (B5244T7) then I'll go, thanking ppl that tried to assist me in my quest.
Cheers guys.
Joe.

The T5 when it was launched in 1993 in the 850 was the only engine in the range to have a 5 cylinders turbocharged engine, and on that time it was really simple to identify.

But after even in the 850 engine on 1994,1995 and 1996 other turbocharged engines with 5 cylinder joined the range, and the T5 , was now to designate the powerful 5 cylinders, but not as extreme as the R versions (T-5R or R).

That undestanding is still true for 70s series (P1) and P2.

You cannot identify the T5 for an engine, because the engine of a S80 T5 is not the same of the 850 T-5,or the same of a S70 T-5,or the same as the S60 T5.

If you wish I can precise the engines inside every T5 version in the Volvo range history.

Joćo_Santos,

Thank you, this is the kind of thing I was asking,
So ONLY the origional 850-T5 is correctly dessignated a T5,
All these others are simply a 5 cyl turbo, which is almost everything from a 2.0lt to the 2.5lt.

Now the R models are probably a different story.

cheers,
Joe
