Interesting as I thought the 2.0 D4 was introduced as Euro 6 (where as the 2.4 was Euro 5)

Interestingly the wife's RAV4 is a 'Eurobollox status 5b' at 167g/km (band H) yet the TFL website states it meets the standard so no charge.
RAV4 petrol or diesel?

The first D4 engines were 1984 cc five-cylinder engines with 163 bhp, and they replaced the earlier 1984 cc 161 bhp five-cylinder D3, while the 'new' D3 was given a 136 bhp version of the 1984 cc 5-cylinder engine. As far as I know, those later 5-cylinder D3 and D4 engines were Euro 5.

The earliest examples of the newer 1969 cc 4-cylinder 178 bhp D4 engine were also classified as Euro 5, but by the time that my own 64-reg example was registered, the 4-cylinder D4 was classified as Euro 6. I'm not certain that there is any mechanical difference that explains this, however. It might just be a certification timing thing.

D4 D5 T3 etc are not an engine type designation this is where the confusion arises..

These are ENGINE POWER range designations what ever engine type or number of cylinders the car has. This has been the case since 2010.

Well, I've just tried your link for my 2015 d4 v60, which shows its a euro 5b, however the power value is 181, not 188 as listed. I've then checked the TFL website, and mine is compliant and therefore exempt.

Definitely worth contesting the decision, as it is meant to be emission based, not year/tax band or other factors.

My 2014.5 MY XC60 is a 181 D4. It was first registered in Feb 2014, and a couple of years later I noticed that the emissions data was incorrect on the V5 reg document. I had to get a letter with the correct values from Volvo UK and then the DVLA issued a new V5 registration document. I presume that when the first VEA engines were registered in the UK (mine was one of the first VEA D4 delivered by my local dealer) a number of them had the wrong data supplied to the DVLA. The XC60 VEA D4 was definitely advertised as Euro 6 in the model brochure specs, and this was one of the reasons I ordered it at that time in late 2013 rather than the D5.

Another website which reports the Euro classification is https://www.hpi.co.uk/content/diesel...dards-checker/

Just found this thread after receiving a Penalty Charge Notice from Bristol City Council for driving a non-compliant vehicle in their Clean Air Zone, which is Euro 6 for diesel and Euro 4 for petrol. Weirdly the notice shows my registration correctly but next to make is 'UNKNOWN' - I would've thought they should have this information from the registration.

I was under the impression my recently purchased 64-plate (reg. Oct.) V60 D4 auto was Euro 6, but this was harder to prove than I was expecting. It took a while but finally found a way to prove it so thought I'd share it as my first post.

The quoted link shows it as 5b, which worried me to start with, but then it showed as ok on the ULEZ checker which gave me some hope...
https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/check-your-vehicle/

Weirdly there's another .Gov checker that does indeed show I should pay a charge for Bristol even though it's free in all the other clean air zones apart from Birmingham, but I think they all have Euro 6/4 standards...
https://vehiclecheck.drive-clean-air.../enter_details

However, the important link I'd like to share is the one that I think definitively shows it is Euro 6 compliant and is another. Gov site, but as it is specifically vehicle certification I don't think it can be argued with...
https://carfueldata.vehicle-certific...used-cars.aspx
Select the top one, 'Find fuel consumption and emissions information on a new or used car'.

It's a bit long winded as you have to enter various details to get the correct model information, then click the link under the Description heading (D4 in my case). This then shows the Vehicle Certification Agency information, which in my case shows a nice clear 6 next to the Euro Standard (under the Further Details heading).

Hope that helps someone in the same situation as me and fingers crossed Bristol CC accept it as proof so I don't have to pay a fine!

!
Strange! This link shows there is no charge in any of the areas for my sept reg 64 plate.

Mine was a manual SE Lux with zero road tax, I think the auto and R design had higher road tax due to higher emissions, maybe that has something to do with it.

Interesting, but yeah I guess must be due to the slightly higher emissions, my SE Lux Nav D4 8sp Auto (not sure what parts of that make a difference) just squeaks under the 110 g/km limit for the £20 tax (VED) bracket with 109 g/km of CO².

Regardless of that though, I'm sure all of those zones are ok for Euro 6 diesels and the last link I posted definitely shows even my auto is Euro 6. Makes me question the reliability of the various 'checkers'.
