I took the car to be diagnosed. The Mech (who I trust) has suggested it could well be turbo. Pugged in and got a few fault codes which he said were probably old ones, but more importantly went all round engine with a stetheoscope and said noise was deffinately coming from around Turbo area. The EGR valve has been suggested by a member on here so will give that a go first if I can get it out. I have removed the operating solenoid but the valve itself refuses to come out. It does seem to move freely though. If I can get it out I will at least clean everything up and go from there. I see there are some on Ebay for £35 so may just bite the bullet and get a new one.

Does it whistle louder if you accellerate harder?

Would the EGR valve make the car use more fuel if that was the fault as suggested earlier ?

Mine is making a similar noise. It begins at about 2000rpm and whistles in proportion to the incresing revs until i change gear. The noise is louder if i accellerate harder.
The car was very recently analysed and diagnosed by a diesel specialist (sorry, mine's a diesel by the way) and they didn't mention anything about it. But I'm convinced the engine just isn't as lively as it was before. I mean, to my mind it's obviously something to do with the turbo, but what? I spotted a trick on youtube where the guy used brake cleaner to locate any cracks in hoses. I'm gonna try that. |

Just to keep you all up to date, it was in fact the Turbo. I have changed it out and all is quiet now.
I checked for play on the old Turbo as its much easier when its on the bench. There was no significant Radial play but the Axial movement was around 35 Thou so obviously the noise was the impellor making contact with the casing. Thanks to all for their input. |
