Has the voltage been checked on the outgoing terminals of the alternator? Ie, the volts should increase slightly when you turn the engine on. May be best to record your results for this on here so people can see whats going on.

Do you have a wiring diagram to hand to establish if there is a charging circuit fuse? Normally there should be in automotive circuits. I am new to Volvo so can't tell if there is or isn't.

Thanks

HI,

Depends on the year as well I suspect. The newer models smart charge so you won't necessarily get 14v charge - especially if the battery doesn't need it.

If you click on the link in my signature, there are several charging system test videos.
Dice and Vida may be required to solve the issue if voltage regulation is done by the ECU otherwise a multimeter will likely pinpoint the problem.
Hopefully someone will clarify when regulation moved from internal on the alternator to the ECU.

You may be better off posting in the section that covers models before 2007: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=19 as the electrics changed significantly between P2 & P3.

OP might well be in the right section as a 2006 S80 could be a P3.

Hi,

Was it a new volvo alternator that was fitted? If so then the likely hood is it will be an issue in the charging circuit. Is this a component in the ECU or another of the fangled control boxes?
Could, of course, be a faulty alternator.
