Default S60T 2000 engine surging

I am finding when the engine is idling it occasionally surges. This appears to happen when the air con cuts in. I have also noticed when cruising that there is an occasional feeling of a similar thing happening. I took the car in to have a service today and the garage noticed the same thing on idle but offered no solution. Has anyone experienced a similar condition and may be able to offer a soloution? The car has covered 170000 miles but has been regularly serviced and in general runs like a dream.

looks like this might require a etm clean and software upgrade, this could be free at main dealer.
