Default No drive!!!!

The gearbox failed coming home from work. No drive then some limited drive. Plus a smell of burnt fluid. I am assuming it is an internal fault as there is plenty of fluid in the box and still a healthy red colour.

I have sourced a replacement box from a 740 that was driven recently with no faults. Some parts I will have to change. Anyone know of any problems taking an automatic box out of a 240?

Thank you.

I hope the 740 box is the 3 speed plus o/d not the later 4 speed that was fitted on the odd late 740.

As regards changing the box it is pretty straightforward. However the box is heavy so if you want to go the route of swapping boxes from underneath you will need use of a pit or a 2 or 4 poster ramp. It is heavy - so good helper(s) needed. Do not contemplate doing it on the ground.

When you get the the box out compare the two side by side and swap parts as needed - eg gear linkage as some things are different.

The easier route if you have no pit or ramp is to remove engine and box together. (See my how to swap engine). Then swap boxes with it all on the ground.

The auto box is slightly different but Haynes should cover that ok.

It is not a quick job - allow a weekend if taking engine/box out together. If you have access to a pit probably a 1/2 day.

If you decide to do this yourself and want telephone support while doing it pm me and I'll let you have my number.

Mike
