Looked to me that a good long blast out does the engine the world of good whereas a load of short journeys doesn`t

Mine was MOT`d last year after a "spirited" drive over 100 miles the night before, the tester said that it was the least smoky diesels he`d done in a very long time

I try and give mine a full throttle to the red line in 3rd on every journey once the car has fully warmed up, after 10 or so miles just to be on the safe side.
I only run mine on BP diesel

No probs, I should have clarified myself better

The ol' barge runs on little else but BP juice. Most of the times regular diesel, sometimes a tank of Ultimate if I'm feeling flush. Like I say, after a long run (and I mean a long run like the Alps and back) the engine definitely feels healthier (free-er, sweeter running).

Once the engine oil gets to about 5-6000miles I'm pretty certain I feel things getting a bit rougher. After new oil, better.

Fortunately, most of my journeys are 75miles (especially in summer when I'm racing on two wheels and need the car to get to the events) plus apart from the regular, once a week 10 mile shopping run. Rest of the time I'm on two legs/wheels. Maybe if I did much many short trips I might consider sticking something in the tank.

I also make sure I don't "use" the engine until it's warmed up (3-5 miles) and I do use the full rpm range. The remap definitely means the engine is rev-happy (happier?) compared to stock

Same here, mine was commented on about the lack of smoke when tested too.

I let mine run through the rev-range at least twice a week..I have a nice long open straight (with no junctions) on my route to work....The straight starts after a 2nd gear corner, raaaaaaaaa....raaaaaaaaaaaaa

I do love the sound of the 5 pot Diesel when cracking-on a bit

I had my 2003 V70 D5 in a well respected Volvo indi last week for its mot , it also had a power loss problem which was resolved by fitting a new in tank pump . The garage gave me a bottle of Texaco ' Clean System transport ' and said it would be good for my car but still not decided wether or not to use it , I am a bit doubtful but the person at the garage would certainly have had many years experience with Volvo engines . The lable says ' designed for big capacity diesel engines that operate under extreme traffic/load/temperature like trucks / buses / earthmovers ' etc , I might try it in my fifty year old Ford 4000 tractor first .

I have run my 2004 D5 since new on pretty much any diesel that is cheapest at the time (motly supermarket) an now after 170k miles it still runs well and is clean at the exhaust. However I also believe in letting the engine run through the rev range on a regular basis and am sure this keeps the exhaust as clean as it is. Personally I see no point in the extra additives as the fuel companies put plenty in anyway.
