No mention of what car you have. !!
Assuming its a P2 V70 or S60. It adjusts at the lever from inside the car. Check the handbrake woes section on this site though. It usually helps

Too right........especially if it's gone out of adjustment all of a sudden - it could be serious problems with the handbrake shoes delaminating. Otherwise its a 5 minute job - peel the handbrake gaiter forward and the adjuster is exposed and is adjusted by a 10mm (from memory) hex nut.
Hope this helps,
Nobby

sorry, yes it's a 2004 V70 manual D5 - just bought the car and the lever is almost pointing virtically upwards - do you recommend I adjust it from inside the car or check the state of the rear shoes first?

getting a bit confused now - just read the thread on handbrake woes - people talking of big bills - and taking about discs but with shoes?

Does the hanbrake apply shoes and if so, where do the discs come in - sorry to be a dunce, but trying to get my heas round what I need to be before I look at the job.

Thanks,

The handbrake shoes are in the rear drum, however the footbrake operates on the disk with pads. To get at the handbrake shoes you would need to take the wheel off and remove the disk/drum.

DON'T DRIVE THAT CAR ANOTHER MILE!!!

Get those handbrake linings checked. If you're lucky its a new set. If the linings have come adrift, drive any further and you're looking at a new hub or two.

Please listen to the above.

Probably well in excess of £500 to fix if you simply ignore it and choose not to check the rear shoes immediately. Plenty on here have found out the hard way.

About £25 for genuine shoes and an hour in total to do both sides.
