Cheers guys (Y)

May give these a try shortly but just been reading about serious engine failures on the D5 with a belt shredding itself.. Car is just out of warranty! Doh!

May just pay for this to be done..

As Clan states you just need the larger caliper brackets as the caliper is the same on the 286's. I've fitted Goodrich braided hoses and run R600+ brake fluid. I'm currently running yellow stuff front and rear but would not recommend them as I get strange random brake fade when they are really (really) hot. Having experienced Carbotech XP10's that is what I would go for next but they cost £££ for a set, they are worth the £££ but I can't really justify it. Police spec pads are supposed to be good so I may try them next.
I'm running a remapped D5 like Andy and upgraded from 286 to 305's on the front. All OEM Volvo stuff (discs and pads) plus Goodridge hoses and, very importantly, new brake fluid.
For most driving this is a more than adequate setup. As Andy says, police spec pads have a good rep but dust like hell.

The following link (courtesy of Engineer via T5D5.org) may be useful to understand brake fluid: http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/wp...fluid_1a.shtml

Assuming you are referring to the cam belt, it should be changed at 96k miles iirc as part of the service. What milage are you up to?

Sorry if this has been asked before but I don't know much of anything about brakes! What kind of cost am I looking at for better brakes. Do I just need bigger discs and pads or new Callipers too?

Cheers for your help guys!
Hi there,

i have a '51 D5 that has been perfect for over a year, it has a chip upto 215 bhp. Is that a remap for your 253 bhp or chip ? I hear the police, run stock D5's with 330mm brakes ard are top notch, I guess if they use them they will be delivering quailty, reliable performance like the D5 does really ?.....

It might interest you guys to know the D5 XC70 has 305 disks as standard. As it's fundamentally a V70 with 4wd then I would assume the disks/calipers/pads will all just bolt on a S60/V70......

Where do you get the plod spec pads? My stealer denies all knowledge.

253bhp will probbaly be a remap (RICA at best guess).

330mm brakes - ORLY LOL. I doubt it as most of plod vehicles run standard wheels, 17" Orestes or Amaltheas and big brakes would need 18s to clear. My refurbed calipers came from an ex-plod V70 T5 and that was running normal 305mm discs. AFAIK even the Volvo bbk is 320mm.

Talk to Rufe at FRF (http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=57125).
Apparently they are good. You will need to cut off the wear leads and they dust like heck.

Hi,

Interesting stuff. The larger caliper brackets, where do you get those? also standard T5 stuff?

Thanks,

Janis

Late night reading!

I am shocked anyone still thinks about using EBC brakes
The company sold rubbish stuff and caused havoc with warped discs etc

they bought any pad and just had them sprayed. Good advertising and the "chavs" swallowed the hype

I too might do a front upgrade, but not if it involves changing the backs
