Default V70 Engine trouble

Hi,
I bought a 2002 V70 Auto 4 months ago with 75k on the clock. It is in good general condition and has been regularly serviced. Recently I have had a few problems starting up. It sometimes hasn't started first time requiring several attempts, then has spluttered away and cut out several times while driving. This happens until the engine warms then it's ok but I notice power has tailed off and the engine sounds rougher than before. The other day the engine symbol appeared in the warning display and stayed on for a while. The engine then wouldn't turn over at all when I tried to restart. Eventually it started and the light has stayed off but it has been spluttering again today. I need some advice on this matter and some tips on getting it sorted out. Any ideas please?
Cheers.

Pick a number ! Petrol or diesel, which engine ? etc etc. I would have thought a code read would be your best starting point and go from there.
