Severe vibration after top mount replacement, Help!!!
Hello all, Have had a few weeks without trouble with my 2.4t however after waiting what seemed forever for my powerflex top engine mount/bush to arrive, It came today, I removed the old one which was virtually non-existent and fitted the new bush, now the whole car vibrates at idle, The steering wheel vibrates like an old transit van!! I loosened the bolts off a bit on the mounts, No avail, It had no vibration at all with the old mount fitted but the engine would rock back and forth quite bad when on and off the throttle, (obviously) but this vibration isnt normal, When i increase the revs at idle slightly, it goes away, its strange, Any ideas people, Also since i changed the bush it seems there is a knock from the front of the engine, If i hold the intercooler to etm pipe i can feel like a dull thudding, Its a weird one, Any help would be appreciated, Im sure some of you have encountered similair problems. Thanks alot. Nick.

I'd check out the engine mounts as it may be they are allowing excessive engine movement/vibration and now you have a solid bush in the top mount it is being transmitted straight into the body of the car.

I removed the center bolt in the main bushing and loosened the bolt in the rear bushing to allow the two arms to swing down. Then I extracted the old bushing in situ, put in the new poly bushing, retightened the two bolts in the bushings and took a test drive. I was shocked disappointed at the vibration the in passenger compartment especially when stopped at idle in gear. The vibration goes away with increased RPM. When I put my hand on the engine at idle there does not seem to be excessive vibration, but there is on the steering wheel. I loosened the center bolt in the poly mount and the vibration in the passenger compartment virtually went away. But I was worried that this would not adequately restrain the engine and I retightened the bolt. The vibration returned, but I just live with it. The independent Volvo shop that I take the vehicle to said they no longer use the poly bushings like they used to because there were too many complaints from customers. They said the center bolt on the main bushing is supposed to be tight. Some years earlier they had put a poly bushing in my 1996 850 wgn with auto tranny and there was no increase in vibration. From what I could see the Volvo bushing is asymmetrical--it is softer in one direction and stiffer at 90 degs. This may result in proper restraint of the enigne while still absorbing the irritating vibrations. Last edited by Jim314; Nov 27th, 2009 at 15:52. |

I've got my bush to do and was thinking of the Powerflex route. It seems that in this case simple rubber is the way to go. Polyurethane is just to hard for this application.

the top engine mount is not designed to stop any engine movement but is a safety feature in conjunction with the long bar that mounts accross the strut tops, this will drag the engine under the car in a heavy impact to stop it intruding into the cabin.
Volvo upgraded this mounting and the new ones dont fail. looks like the Polyurethane bush is too hard and transmitting vibration,i would send it back and get the latest Volvo one. regards GH.
