I thought the 2.9 was only fitted to the XC90 ? I think that had really bad gearbox issues in the UK

Again, thanks for the responses.
INPO: The 2.0l 4 cyl. matched to an 8-speed is FWD and the most basic XC70 sold here in 2015-2016. Because it's turboed, it has ~200hp. I've owned 3 167hp 5 cyl. V70s so the 4 cyl. feels just fine to me. I'm all for some power and definitely all for a slower turning engine. More cylinders = lower highway rpm--generally. However, the 8 speed makes up for a lot of that. Keep in mind that I grew up with porcine American cars with V8 engines mated to 2 and 3 speed transmissions. FYI: GM's "Powerglide" 2 speed, while short on gears with two, was one of the strongest machines ever made by man. Folks like yourselves have maligned Volvo's engine/trannie selections for this market. I essentially agree as Europe always got the juicier examples from any manufacturer. I just want to know to avoid some queer duck product. Also, and forgive me if I've said this already, I'd just rather not buy an AWD system. I've never needed one. I don't need the additional weight or the specter of destroying my "central gear splitter" with unmatched tires. Now here's a funny one: The 2015 I drove last week in The Garden State had a screen which displayed audio data only.....no NAV or backup. Fine. I never had NAV or backup so I can do without. After all, I am buying used. BUT, a screen built into the dash which basically does nothing looks stupid to me. So, I might opt for one which has these features. Then, of course, there's the solid fact that 10 year old NAV is nowhere near as good as what's on our phones and whatever kind of map retrieval system Volvo installed is likely to fail and have no support from Volvo. ENTER The Sunshine State: I found one (2.0l/8-speed) loaded with NAV and backup....in Miami, Florida. Anybody want to come along? |

Just a heads up: that here in UK (maybe elsewhere) the 4-cyl 2.0 engine had a problem with piston rings (the oil one I think) getting clogged up over time and eventually burning oil; it's a well documented issue.

Yes on the ring warning.
One fellow said the ring problem was exacerbated by the current trend toward extended oil changes. He claimed the drain holes in the piston skirt get clogged. This same thing is documented in a very popular Toyota engine. Halving the OCI is what's recommended. This does make buying a remotely located car more difficult. Darn. |
