timing belt
Hi CAN anyone help me out i started to replace my cam belt and had released the tensoiner to look at the pin hole, at which point my friend turned the crankshaft whilst checking to see if the socket he had fitted. i think the belt has jumped as if you turn the engine via the crank it locks up as if the pistons are connecting with the valves! it is a 240dl estate 1987 caburreter (i cant spell that) and rather than take out the starter to lock the ring gear is there another way of securing the crank to undo the bolt as i am limited in tools and could not undo the top bolt on the starter. also i will have to remove the belt and align the marks but it now being out of sinc will this cauase me problems, any advice appreciated
thanks mark |

Hi Mark,
First, proceed with great care! A 1987 carb'ed motor should mean it's a case of the B230K; the only redblock of interference design. Well, you found that out already, as the motor locks up when trying to turn it. ipdusa.com has what looks to be a great tool that prevents the crankshaft from turning. It costs 48 USD + postage, but it shouldn't be too difficult to make a copy. Apart from that I have heard about "The Rope Trick"; insert a piece of (soft!) rope into one of the spark holes, enough to stop the crank from turning without metal-to-metal contact. Never tried it. Good luck, Erling.

timing
if you hold the cam with a spanner on the nut on the top pulley slacken the tensioner again and gently turn the timing marks on the crank 90 degrees out of tdc or bdc either direction will do that doesnt hit the valves.
Turn the cam 90 degrees to the tdc mark as well ,let the tensioner go and try turning the engine slowly, if it still locks turn the crank back and turn the cam 180 degrees. once you have so it will turn over you can try putting it in 2nd gear ,put a good quaility ring spanner on the crank nut and turn it to take any slack out of the drive, then smack it with a lump hammer hard. I have a air nutrunner which makes it easy or the 12 volt ones for removing wheel nuts from argus are ok and may undo the crank, the only other thing is to tow it to a tyre place and get them to undo it with the air nutrunner, leave the rad off so they can get at it ok,but even then you may find you cant get the pulley off without a hydraulic puller. If you get a haynes manual it will show you how to set the timing marks |

Flywheel can be locked by removing starter for access and using a pry bar. I use this when putting in gear and foot brake on doesn't work or on automatics.

i've seen B200F's having to have new exhaust valves due to cambelt snappage (there thicker then the intake so stick out more) and thats on the low lift M cam. |
