Default XC90 T8: Creaky brakes

One thing that stands out on my otherwise quiet and serene XC90 is that the brakes are very creaky when starting starting and stopping. Being a T8, I'm sure it doesn't help as there is often no engine noise to mask it. Pulling up at the kids school recently, I saw a fellow Dad wince as he heard it whilst I manoeuvred into a tight spot, so I'm know it's not just me being picky.

I always assumed it was to do with the regenerative braking system but it does seem better when I disable the auto handbrake (which obviously isn't a long term solution).

Was going to drop it into the dealer to look at anyway, but does anyone else have this issue or had it resolved?

They shouldn't squeak at all. There's probably a small stone caught in between the calliper and the disc tbh.

You mean the brakes squeal rather than creak

It is a trait of automatic gearbox cars, its more a suspension/brake creaking noise when just creeping along holding on the brakes. Unless you have actual brake squeel which other people have complained about. Which is another thing all together and although not a big problem is anoying and need sorting.

Go fix them under warranty. There should be zero noticeable noise from the breaks. I had both sets replaced (not sure what as my dealer doesn't give me detailed invoices but they had to wait on parts for a while as this was a common problem with early cars) and nothing I notice any more. A good test is if a bystander notices break sqeal.

Just to clarify, I do mean a creak (like an old door) as opposed to a higher pitched brake squeal.

It just occurs when manoeuvring at very low speed, like parking or moving in a traffic queue. If I pull away/stop quickly, no problem.

I think therefore its the auto handbrake system being a bit slow to engage and disengage fully. I also find that if I'm inching forward into a parking spot, the auto handbrake takes a pit of power to release, meaning I lurch forward - brown trousers ahoy - so I have to disable it at times.

My last car had an auto box/auto handbrake setup and it worked seamlessly in comparison, so it must be a technical issue.

I thought it must just be the car bedding in initially, but 10 month and 8000 miles later, I don't think it's right...

I find the auto handbrake a pain when manoeuvring and always disengage it. It's fine at other times.

I think this is my 4th car with a auto-handbrake but the only one I've had a issue with to be honest. Odd really, as the car is otherwise a joy to drive.

Agree, and don't think its intended to be used in these situations either. When manoeuvring you want to be able to creep on the brake, not have to dab the throttle to move. In queueing traffic however, the auto hold function comes into its own.

I think you are right - it's probably not the breaks. Could be some unlubricated spring somewhere in the handbrake. I use autohandbrake function and I only notice it coming on and off when the icon lights up on dashboard - get the dealer to fix it. Granted we get a lot more suspension and engine noise on D5s that T8 lot does not and it could be masking it.
