Get the brakes done then it's safe, as for the rest, get it done when it's affordable.
Mines on 194k and no record of the last cambelt change. Just because it's past the service interval does not necessarily mean impending doom. If the gears work ok, why does it need a fluid change?
I didn't buy a car that had full service history and a recent cambelt and water pump change done because I wanted a cheap car.
Hope you didn't pay too much!

How much did you pay for yours?
Wondering what you're gambling with.

Default do not dismay

use your roadside assistance and get her towed to a decent garage get the complex stuff done by someone that knows it it sounds horrific the towing but get it done its easier when shes sitting in the garage being fixed and your getting somewhere
have you tried Phoenix motors in Haverfordwest Pembs? Reg there's an independent specialist held in good esteem by the main dealerships he's good fair priced knows volvos like the back of his hand not sure in Camarthenshire isnt there a volvo independant down in Ferryside im sure those boys know volvos theres always a few parked about outside Ferryside garage
in the end theres no getting away from it Cars arnt cheap neither cheap to run cheap to maintain cheap to insure or cheap to fix if your bills a grand then really, thats not huge. Ugly, a pain in the backside but not ridiculous think how much would a merc or beemer have cost to put inat a specialist dealership. Sit down and figure out what you will do yourself and what needs to be tackled by an independant to get her up and running
there are those out there who will scoff at you and be generally unhelpful but people are amazing especially mechanics when it comes to being helpful
guaranteed someone in your areas going to fit the bill for the mechanic help you need at the right price dont be afriad to engage with your local garages to try finding them

I don't think it has ever been stated what the guy paid for the car?

Whatever the motives for the original posting IMHO for what it's worth, it seems all of the issues are pretty much standard for a Volvo D5 of that age. Mainly belts and brakes. It just needs some good catch up servicing which when done should stand the car in good stead for many more miles, which as many of us know these cars will reliably eat up.
Subject to the above caveat with only 108k miles the man may possibly have got a bargain?

i tend to take my v70xc to a local garage, with the parts so they can repair.
