I bought a litre in Halfords. Kept in the back of the car for emergencies.

Perhaps you also need to keep an empty 1 litre container as well for emergencies where there is too much oil in the sump!

I don't know what the oil consumption on a 2010 XC70 D5 is, but I've done 8000 miles since I bought the car last August (2016), and haven't added a drop. Oil was changed in July at annual service.

on early D5 engines, it's difficult to make a simple judgement about oil consumption as the DPF program can leak diesel into the sump, diluting the oil and actually raising the level. So between the engine oil it burns and the diesel fuel it doesn't, the sump level needs monitoring and the oil routinely changing, more so than cars which don't have this type of DPF.

My D5 uses very little oil and I check it regularly useing the technicians dipstick, in 4 years I have topped it up by 500ml on one occasion, the dash readout said 100% the dipstick barely to the min mark, as I was towing to Scotland next day I topped it up and mentioned it at service time, dealer told me they calibrated the dash gauge at service time, I asked they do a better job of it.
Saying all that I carry a litre of oil in the car, always have always will. Too much oil may cause problems too little WILL cause problems and on my D5 it's easy enough to syphon some out of the technicians dipstick hole if needed.
