Unhappy Any known gearbox issues?

Hi,
For some unknown reason my 2012 S40 D3 has decided that 5th gear cannot be selected - it was fine yesterday - I suspect a selector problem - can get 1 -4 + 6 and reverse but 5th is like finding a blank - gear lever will not find anything - no noises or crunches. Gearbox is an M66 or MMT 6.

Question Next stage

Booked the car into my usual independent garage for investigation - looks like a lot of things will need removing to check the selector linkage but hoping for a bill of £hundreds rather than £thousands - i.e. no gearbox damage

Angry ongoing saga

Just spoken to the garage - after fiddling it went into 5th 3 times then went back to the previous 'baulking' - going to see them and it's looking like a repacement gearbox is the ONLY answer - so an enormous bill after a very long wait for the part - would love to know the cause especiallly as it's only done 37700 miles.........

Apologies - oh ****!

Sorry to hear that gnhuk sounds very unlucky seeing as your car has incredibly low mileage!! surely something has gone incredibly wrong with it to break at that mileage?!

Garage contacted Volvo UK and they'd never experienced anything remotely similar so car is back - running fine - provided I don't try to select 5th gear.. Exchange box ordered - fitting date to be arranged, at my convenience, once it's arrived - fortunately I do have some money reserved for 'emergencies'....
It would be interesting to hear what Volvo discover when they get the original, faulty, box back - recall or service issue?.

Exchange Gearbox fitted - I gather it wasn't an easy task - and now I can use 5th gear again I'm trying to avoid 'racing' changes...It certainly wasn't cheap.

Did Volvo participated in exchange costs at all? or full cost of exchange part+fitting was dumped at you??

I had to pay the full price as it wasn't being done by a main dealer - work done locally by someone I trust and their prices are below Volvo main dealer - and are walking distance from my house whereas the main dealer is either two buses or a train and bus journey away. Volvo UK effectively washed their hand of it - I'm a bit less than impressed!

I have seen several cases where the fixing intended to secure a selector fork to its shaft had come loose causing this effect. There is an episode of Wheeler Dealers where it happens on an Audi TT. Once inside the gearbox it is easy enough to fix, its just the cost/hassle of gaining that access. I once spent a morning removing a morris 1100 (as per mini) gearbox and taking it to be fixed, only to be told that their normal practice was to drill in from below, tighten it up then braze over the hole.
