Default creeking/ groaning

Hi

When manovering the car at slow speeds, i am getting a creeking and groaning noise from the front of the car, steering also goes tight just before full lock,
Steering fluid is on the max and rack was replaced three years ago and no sign of leekage,
today with the help of a friend we changed the front anti-roll bar bushes as they were shot, anyhow this has made no effect to the creeking and groaning and tight steering- the car also pulls slightly left when driving,,,
Any pointers on what to check or look for would be much appreaciated.

Craig

check subframe bolts and lower arm pivots. my subframe did this til I removed them and re-Loctited them. mine was happening on the drivers side worse cos the subframe pins are on passenger side.

Spring shifting within the strut assembly? Check the stop lug is intact on the strut/spring base. You should be able to do this with the wheel removed.

Unfortunately, the only real way to check the upper spring seat is to remove the complete assembly.

How I went about this was I jacked up the front of the car and with the car off I started to turn the steering wheel back and forth and listening where exactly the noises were originating from. Might help to have a buddy turning the wheel while you listen around. Some creeks were coming from where the steering shaft goes through the firewall and the rest were originating from the upper strut mount area. I think I used liberal amount of spray silicone on both and it has worked thus far..

It never crossed my mind but when shifting from drive to reverse or visa-versa there is a mighty fud/bang - i thought this was due to the autobox needing a flush,
Anyhow with the bonnet up and shifting from drive to reverse stationary, the whole engine and box are moving, there does seem to be a tear in the top mount which i am sure should not be there, from underneath the front subframe bushes do not move, but looks like there is major play on the smaller mount kind of under the gearbox and the gearbox is hitting the bumpstop on the subframe above the wishbone, also lock to lock looks like the engine and box is moving side to side,
Started getting dark will have another look tommorrow.

sounds like one of your big lower engine mounts (front or rear) is worn too. Easy way to find is to get a trolley jack with a piece of wood on it and jack up the engine under the sump.
You'll see which one is shot then. my rear one was separated when I got the car and it felt like the engine was trying to make a break for freedom.

Hi Dunc,

front offside lower mount had broke for freedom when i bought it, thats now been done, got a good look at the rear one at the back yesterday which looks good- that was done in 2015 backed up by service history, the other that remain are most likely worn, the smaller tie bar bush has gone for sure, will jack the sump and see whats going on.

Got the center tiebar/torque mount off today, the smaller rubber bush is chewed to bits, larger bush looks ok, have two poly bushes on order along with the top engine mount, will update once fitted.

Default bushes fitted

After a struggle, new tiebar bushes and topmount fitted today, once off the blocks and the first bit of manovering- creeking noise/s still present, on the road the car feels much better than it did although it still pulls left,,
Gearbox thump when stationary shiffting from D to R has also improved, once back home i kept purposely manovering and the creeking noise/s seem to have stopped, also steering does not feel as tight.
