I know my AUX belt was changed at 54k too...my dealer has just tried to tell me the cambelt is 108k or 10 years not 6 (my service book says 6) although mildly academic on the basis I will be on about 105k at the 6th year service. Mild trauma at the cost quoted however (£925 for 6th year service and cam/aux belts change) so think its time to look for a decent specialist in the Northampton/Peterborough areas...

There was a recall on the MK2 S60 for a dodgy tensioner on the aux belt so check if the car had this issue and if so was a recall done as for the water pump it is possible it could fail as could any part but volvo seem to be confident as they dont require a pump change at timing belt change which is 108000 miles (the whole changing of the pump while changing the timing belt came from a plastic impeller pump fitted by VW on the 96 passat and it became the norm as it was an easy job while the engine was stripped)As for fitting a new engine into a 12 reg car to me seems over the top especially as there is plenty of low mileage second hand engines available and generally volvo engines are reliable and any independent will be a lot easier to talk to than a dealer for fitting

Resolved!
Hi guys
Sorry I left you all hanging - I am pleased to report that I have got my car back today after 22 days, complete with a whole new engine fresh from Sweden. I am content that, despite previous comments and an earlier recall (not affecting my car) concerning the auxillary belt, that the root cause of the problem was a slowly dying water pump which was "silently" cooking the whole engine. Both Volvo and the AA confirmed that the auxillary belt remained in the correct position even once the cam belt had come off. It seems that the cam belt coming off was as much a symptom as the cause of the total engine destruction. Volvo have provided a very decent discount to the extent that I paid something similar to the cheapest option I could find for a refurbished engine of unknown origin to be fitted elsewhere, but with the reassurance of this being new and fitted by Volvo. I would obviously have preferred this not to have happened but hats off to Volvo for coming to a figure we could all live with. |
