The V40 is a grand reliable car that is extremely comfortable and stylish too. The V50 is a more modern Ford-based car that handles better and has the advantage of common rail diesel technology. It also happens to look very good as well.

It's a tough choice really, and some on here will point you in either direction. What I'd say though is if you find a really nice V40 with low mileage and full spec at a reasonable price, I myself would be very tempted. Otherwise I'd go for the newer car every time.

I think you'll be lucky to find a diesel V50 for £5k thus I would imagine a V40 is more likely with your budget. Don't know enough about the V40 to comment though.

I'd totally agree with this comment. For 5k you will be looking at entry level V50s. For the same money, you could get a final production V40 Sport Lux with all the gadgets, full leather, alloys, chrome trim, etc and reasonable mileage <50k. I am biased as I have a V40, but for the money, I would still go V40.

i.e. UK location disregarded

V40

vs

V50

Give it 12 months or so, when the V50s start coming down more, and I would recommend a 2.0 V50 as they are a much better car.
