Default thinking of a mk1 s60/80 D5. What mpg could i expect?

I’m looking at an s60 or 80 2.4 diesel, something around 2002-2006 is there anything i should particularly look out for on them? What sort of MPG might i get? Never had a desel and tend to get cars 25 years or older so hoping to save some money on Petrol!

Default 55 plate S80 D5

Hi I owned a 55 plate S80 D5 and it was a brilliant car and returned an average of 49 mpg and was a lovely car to drive and was far more economical than my current 2010 S80 D5. However, the reason I got rid of the 55 plate D5 was the dash reflected on the front screen in bright sunlight and you couldn’t see a bloody thing.

Interestingly I owned a 2002 plate S60 D5 just as good on fuel and didn’t suffer the reflection issue, not sure what the difference was..

I’m actually going to look at 55 plate S80. I love my old estates but 18 mpg is getting a little expensive these days! And the S80’s look nice!

They changed the engines in the S60 in 2005 from Euro 3 (163bhp black engine cover) to Euro 4 (185 or 163bhp, silver engine cover) I think the S80 kept the euro 3 until the mark 2 came out. The E3 is the most economical returning low 50's in manual form on a run and mid 30's-low 40's bumbling around town.
The E4 is a bit thirstier, and autos sap a bit more economy as well (obviously).

I run a V70 MY2004 but wear polarising sunglasses for daylight driving - sorts the reflections issue a treat.

That’s exactly what i was after thank I’ve always had estates but I’m tempted by a saloon for a change ;p and it looks like my bass amp fits in the boot.... if it doesn’t I’ll have to play a smaller instrument like the triangle

On a run my 2003 D5 S60 manual does just over 600 miles on a tank, I don't thinks thats to bad for a 2.4 Diesel with 183K miles on the clock. Mine is the Euro 3 engine, so has no DPF.

185 D5s can achieve mid-50s mpg, 60mpg average must be within reach in the right conditions, but would need restraint.
