C70 convertible roof - repairing wear
I've noticed the roof on my 2005 Mk1 C70 convertible has a few wear marks in the fabric. One of them has worn through so is a small hole.
Anyone got any tips for repairing the holes? I was thinking about patching from the inside as a patch on the outside would look a bit crap but (and maybe I don't need to worry?) but my roof has a kind of rubberised 'skin' under the canvas fabric. So if I pull back the roof lining in the car to look at the roof I can't see the small hole as it's covered by the 'skin'. I don't know whether this backing to the canvas or whether the roof is made up of several layers that pull taut when the roof is down? Anyway, enough rambling. Any hints\tips from anyone else who has had this issue will be very appreciated. Thanks |

I remember years ago when I had a escort cabrolet with a cloth roof with a hole I managed to push material through the hole to patch it from behind I used a repair kit from an inflatable bed as it had flocked patches and carefully used the glue that came with it. Don't know how long it lasted as I sold it about a month later.

I patched an MX5 fabric lined vinyl hood using the patch from behind method.
It works well if you get some of the tension off the fabric by putting the hood partially down - try using a repair piece cut from something like a fleece lined car cover (outer coating layer to the underside of the split) use clear silicone sealant as the glue - any excess that comes through the split can be wiped off using methylated spirit and will still leave a waterproof flexible repair. If you make the patch at least 5cm greater all the way round from the split it won't split further when the hood comes back under tension. It is important to leave at least 5cm either end of the split/cut to stop it from increasing in length under the silicone after the repair. There's also this stuff - Stormsure RKROOF Car Soft Top Repair Kit ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/Stormsure-R.../dp/B00BRHRBQG ) worth reading the reviews - there's a how to available https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9K1V8Rf_jdY
