I understand D24 can have longevity issues due to oil entering head at one end and having to cascade down to the other end, the engine being a Golf diesel with 2 extra cylinders and what is OK for a 4 cylinder doesn't necessarilly work for a 6 cylinder and understand that 5 cylinder version can also have issues. I have read albeit on the internet though the guy did appear to know what he was talking about though I can't find the link that using fully synthetic oil and overfilling by half a litre does help lubrication. I can understand fully synthetic oil but overfilling?

There is really quite a lot of information on this engine, of which I have read some. AFAIK the overfill is due to the location of the pickup pipe to the oil pump - full explanation here: http://www.nuceng.ca/bill/volvo/Volv...gesmissing.pdf (the volvo faq is also on this site).
For a starter here is a US thread (vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=14841.- ), US discussion will concentrate on the d24 (240) and d24T (740) as the 940 d24Tic was not exported to the states.
The acknowledged 'guru' of the engine is a chap called Tom Bryant who makes a living rebuilding the engines and much of his wisdom is to be found on the d24 list at tufts.edu
