Hi Paul,

I have been looking at driveshafts myself (for a 1998 T5).

Can you see a white bar code label on the axle, which will have a Volvo number on it?

Do you need
the short axle (LHS on normal right hand drive UK car)?
or
the longer axle with the support bearing (RHS on normal right hand drive UK car)

I guess your shaft "fell out" of the gearbox? So is it the casing of the inner joint that has cracked?

Do you have one large (36mm on early cars eg 1998) nut holding the axle into the steering knuckle, or a smaller bolt and washer (on later cars)?

Is your gearbox auto or manual? Sorry, I can now see you say Auto.

Steve

It's the right (drivers) (UK) side I need . It is right hand drive. It has the 36mm hub nut.
I can't get a number off it at the mo'. My mechanic has the broken shaft .
Yes it is the gearbox end that's busted I think.
My Mec' has had 2 delivered and sent them back as not compatible....
Thanks.

Hi Paul

OK I think you need the same bits as I think I do. (For a 1998 V70 T5 Auto)

I believe the Volvo part number is
9163584
which is the complete shaft and inner and outer joints.

This item is on ebay
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/202665388847?ul_noapp=true

and this is in Berlin

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Antriebsw...e/311892911460

I have been looking for and haven't been able to find the inner (tripod) joint on its own.

Let me know how you get on.

Hope that helps,
Steve

Also see the recent thread on J&R Driveshafts, Paul. No experience with them myself but others have good things to say.

Hi all,

I tried J and R, but they only do the outer CV joint, not the complete axle or the inner joint.

J&R have already sent the wrong item.... I've used them before for a 1/2 shaft for my old 850 ( current T5 is its replacement DOH) . They are very helpful and currently trying to source the right shaft.....
Will check the links.

My mechanic still has the J&R shaft which he believed to be wrong, as it was slightly different to the old one.
He has sent the UK reg number to them and they state that the one he's got is correct and will fit .
So he will be over next Monday to try it (he's away on his hols at this week but still working on this).
fingers crossed.

Hi Paul,

Things to check across the two shafts, without taking them apart are:
number of splines on end of outer shaft
number of splines on end of inner shaft
diameter of fat part of outer shaft
diameter of fat part of inner shaft
overall length (presumably compressed length is the best measurement to take)
similar expanding circlip present and correct near end of inner shaft
same number of teeth on ABS ring
Does the new shaft have the same large nut (not smaller bolt) as the old shaft does?

If the old shaft has the Volvo white label on it, then that will let you lookup info for it eg
http://www.proparts.se/en/artiklar/f...ve-axle-4.html

Just checking this is a 1999 T5 auto FWD not AWD?

Steve
