Soon to be new 2004 Volvo S40 owner
Hello...
Was in the market for a new car and was looking to part ex in my Alfa 156... I narrowed it down to 2 cars, looks wise, a Ford Mondeo 2.2 TDCI ST or a Volvo S40 but after seeing both in the flesh and taking a test drive, the Mondeo didn't come anywhere close. Totally different league. So after the test drive of a 2004 S40 2.0D SE I put down a deposit. To be in my budget, the one i have gone for has got 85,000 miles on it although only 2 owners (1 was Volvo) and with FSH. Car looked in perfect condition in side and out and drove well... Independent dealer is doing service, mot and valet for me to pick up on Friday. Just wondering if there was anything I should look out for (bit late now i know) but what about things like cam belt change, major service intervals etc... Thanks in advance. |

Hopefully the diesel owners will chip in here. The 2.0D has had a few issues with EGR valves but most owners appear happy with it. Fuel economy tends to be lower than Volvo advertise with few owners reporting anything like expected economy.
Only expensive servicing cost to look out for is the particulate filter if your car has one as they are very expensive to replace though I don't know what the recommended replacement mileage is I'm afraid. Good luck with your S40. I'm delighted with mine nearly 3 years on. Iain

Check that the service has been carried out by a Volvo dealer. If not then make absolutely sure that whoever carried out the 75k mile service actually replaced the exhast particulate filter.
This service costs in the region of £1100 by a proper Volvo agent due partly to the fact that the exhaust filter itself costs about £350. A non Volvo service might have ommitted to fit this part. Good luck with your car though. |
