LPG mpg, post your stats

Here's my last couple of weeks. Figures reading across are miles travelled, litres of lpg used, mpg from the computer and actual gas mpg:

My system is now running 100%, might be a tad rich, but I'm testing it next week with a wide band lambda sensor.

This could be interesting information for anyone considering converting, payback time will also depend on price of LPG locally.

I paid 48.9p a litre for a fill up yesterday, that made my petrol equivalent 56mpg!

Those figures pretty much fit with my experience. Best I ever got was 289 miles from 46 litres of gas on a steady run from Yorkshire to Plymouth.

More usually I'll get between 230 and 250 miles on a tankful (46 litres) in my 97 V70 10v auto (140,000 lpg miles, coming up on 190,000 in all).

In that 140,000 miles I reckon I've saved £9800 in fuel costs. I paid £1700 for the conversion and £3500 plus a knackered old Honda for the car 5 years ago. Was it ever worth it?

I find that using the cruise control where possible, and limiting the engine speed to 2500rpm makes a noticeable difference.

If you can bear driving on the motorway at less than 65 mph the figures improve, but your temper doesn't!

My s80 is a T6 and I get 160 miles from 45 litres. :-(

Can one assume your a Goldman-Sachs executive?

Out of interest, what do you get on petrol? If it's no more than about 20mpg then your LPG mileage is probably about right.

Wonder if a bit of an lpg check-up might improve things? New plugs maybe, new air filter??

Mind you, I'll bet you're a bit quicker than me away from the lights, Even the local teenage tearaways in their 900cc Corsas leave me standing!

Hi,

thanks for the concern. I did spend a lot of time and money ensuring it was setup correctly when I got it installed. I am pretty confident all is ok, and its running fine (even with the rica 320 tune) :-)

currently petrol is showing 19.6 on the dial.

I have had it up to 21mpg combined on petrol be I had to take it realy easy.

Can get 24mpg on petrol on the motorway and around 20 on lpg.

I do think 16mpg is awful, but it you do the sums and take into account the4 mpg difference and lpg and petrol and price, then I get better economy than the better half's "08" nissan micra (1.2)

so all in all not bad really.

(BTW I do sometimes embarasse young dudes in their coras's trying to impress their girlfriends. Initialy I give them hope up to about 30 mph then just leave them for dead. childish I know but were all kids a heart. surprised a few others drivers as well. BMW's are my favourite)

Mine is appalling around town, the figures I posted were either solely motorway or with the majority of miles on the motorway.

Should be interesting this week to see what it's like now on the wide band lambda sensor.

the old 240 on a simple mixer system does between 22 - 25 on local driving and motorway driving is between 25-28MPG.

I'm makeing some custom parts to see if I can get it a little better, but a lot of it comes down to the way the car is driven.

i average 200 miles on 40 ltrs of lpg which is about 25mpg thats mainly local running and not much motorway work it does drop to around 22mpg if using aircon

It's always a bit of a shock as to how much difference aircon makes to your fuel consumption. Almost all cars now have it, and with many, you can't avoid using it for demisting the screen. It'll add 10% to your fuel bill though.

If you need any confirmation of how much energy aircon uses, with the aircon off get the car gently cruising at about 60mph on a flat quiet road, then turn the aircon on, and you'll feel the effect as the car loses power.

I'm surprised that in all the advice to save fuel it's never mentioned, and equally, that the green brigade have never latched on to it as a crusade.

I'm probably sounding my age now, but there's a lot to be said for a good tilt and slide sunroof (metal, not glass) and opening quarter-lights!

on our factory bi-fuel i generally get 160-180 miles out of a 45l fill, but most of that will be town driving with some dual carridgeway work in that.

on a longer run i have seen 220 miles, but never much more.

to be honest, i still think a derv would be cheaper and much less hastle to run
