Never towed with it but it must have been designed to work on a fully loaded vehicle ie 5 up plus luggage.

We only ever tow with two up so will be well within the max load.

Never done it, but from memory the recommendation is that for a rear wheel puncture, move one of the front wheels to that position and put the space saver on the front.

Presumably on the basis that a full size wheel has a better load carrying capacity than a slim space saver?

That's the exact opposite of the advice I've been given!
The front does more work than the back, so that's where the best wheels should be. There are cars where the space saver won't fit on the front (eg: the Accord Type R - Honda says it's deliberate).

I have a full size spare and tyre, courtesy of a 3rd party insurance - he shot on to an island and damaged just the near side rear wheel, but it takes up too much room when we are away with the caravan.

Useful to have it at home though I have never needed it.

Don’t think I would have bought one.

I did it a few years ago, when I shredded a tyre late one night when driving from Skipton to Northumberland with our V70 and caravan.
The puncture happened right on the top of Blubberhouses moor, which is not the ideal place to break down, and it left me no option but to fit the space saver.
I fitted it to the near side front and carefully drove the 120 miles home.
I stopped a few times to check that the tyre was not overheating, and kept my speed down to the low to mid 40’s, which is not really much slower than the 50mph limit for towing on a single carriageway road anyway.
I can’t say that the car felt any different when driving on the space saver, and everything felt absolutely normal.

I have never needed to but would do so if needed with no qualms. In fact I cannot remember the last time I needed to fit the spare to a vehicle because of a puncture.

Apart from the speed restriction of the spacesaver they must have the same loading capacity. Remember they are inflated to 60 or 65 psi rather than the 30 or 40 of normal tyres on a v or xc70.

All tyres will state their maximum load at a maximum pressure, provided the space saver matches the tyres fitted to the car in that respect just observe the speed restriction on the spacesaver.. Better to ascertain this at home before you set off than try doing it on a wet and windy night on the hard shoulder in the depths of nowhere mind..

Paul.
