Default 12 volt tach on 6 volt PV?

Just read this on the brickboard. Can that really work?
Ron: I decided against buying this unit, due to some restrictions and less than optimal performance. I thought I needed one of these for a 12 volt Smiths tachometer, but to my delight, the tach works OK with 6 volt power in my Amazon?
Been thinking about fitting a tach on my 6 volt 544

Arcturus;

Automotive electronics are typically designed and built to be pretty forgiving of the poor power quality occurring in a vehicle (high voltage variations, voltage sags, noise spikes, load dump spikes to name but a few). The internal circuit of a 12V Tach that is happy with half that exemplifies this insensitivity to voltage variations, and apparently has very tolerant operating voltage requirements, that it works OK on just 6V...accuracy would be questionable and would have to be verified, but its hard to argue with success...if it work, it works...I can't guarantee this for other tachs, but you can try if you're similarly lucky...

Happy New Year!
