MY05 S60 Cruise Control not working. It is not the CPS
Hi all,
New to the forum and sort of new to Volvo's. I bought an S60 as a daily commuter instead of daily driving my Leon cupra (it's a thirsty car). Fab car, does the job and built rock solid. I do have an issue which has been covered a fair bit but not quite what I have. I currently don't have cruise control. It didn't work when I got the car but then suddenly worked and since may last year has packed up again. When I turn the ignition to position 2, full power to all accessories, and press the cruise button I get "cruise" on the dash. Then I turn the engine on and cruise disappears and it won't come back on. What do you think the issue is? I don't have access to Vida/dice but can scan it with a generic scanner (yet to do). Any help would be much appreciated as I have some long journeys planned this year. Thanks |

it sounds to me as though there is an issue with a dry joint or poor connection, most probably at the connector block connection on the upper steering column - easiest way to check that is to disconnect the battery, (IF YOU DON'T DISCONNECT THE BATTERY - YOU RUN THE RISK OF TRIGGERING AIR BAG CODES WHICH CAN ONLY BE CLEARED USING DICE+ViDA or a higher level reader) remove the shroud from the steering column, disconnect cruise control connector from the block, then using fine emery cloth/steel wool/emery board, clean both the male and female pins, then spray switch cleaner aka isopropyl alcohol on all the pins; if you don't have emery cloth/steel wool etc to hand, unplug and replug the connector several times to clean the pins, then finally reconnect the plug to the connector block, reconnect the battery. Take it for a short drive - NB the cruise will not activate below 30mph - if all is well replace the steering column shroud - if that doesn't work the easiest way will be to find the fault will by using a Dice and Vida to read the codes as a generic OBDII reader is unlikely to find Volvo manufacturer based codes.

It is "standard plugin" to the steering wheel loom end connectors - hence the need to disconnect the battery otherwise there's the risk of setting off the steering wheel bag when you remove the switch.

The switch can be flipped out of the steering wheel with a plastic "trim tool" or blunt screwdriver...but it is always worth checking the connection to the left hand column lever switch as well.

Finally having some time after getting back from Finland and the dreaded first week back in work from annual leave.
I am going to try and tackle this on the weekend. Fingers crossed it will solve the issue as I have some big journeys to cover this year. I will report back. Thanks |

I have taken all of the plugs out and given them a good clean and refitted.
Thankfully all work but I still have the cruise control issue. I can get "cruise" to show on the dash ONLY when the ignition is in position 2 (power to all accessories). Once the engine starts it won't work. That would lead me to believe it has to be something mechanical/sensor like the brake position sensor now that I have changed the CPS. Any other ideas? I guess I had get it scanned with Vida. Thanks |

Have you checked the Reluctor rings for corrosion & cracks?
