Default iPhone to unlock car

Just watched a YouTube video of the new software for iPhones 13.4 . Apple have updated CarPlay so that your iPhone can act as a key if your car has NFC. Hopefully Volvo makes full use of it.

I like the idea, but at the moment I'd guess most of us still need to carry keys regardless.

Extending to a smart watch would be handy though, for times when my phone and keys are behind me in the bottom of my laptop bag and I've two bags of groceries.... swinging my leg under the back bumper trying to get the boot to open...

Needs an NFC reader integrated into the door or door pillar (a la Tesla).

I can’t see this coming to Volvo, they seem to have lost enthusiasm for pioneering new stuff and have farmed it all out to Polestar.

Yep, great idea, I mean using a plip key from 20 metres to lock, unlock your car is soooooo 90s.

Has anyone on here lost their iPhone or whatever, your whole life is on there, payment ability, purchase and sales ability, all your contacts, including work and play and now they want to put your car on there...........crazy, sorry but not for me.....

If you loose your iPhone you can brick it, wipe it remotely.

I like the idea of my phone opening the car, prime example... Volvo was locked in my garage , I was out in the wives car . When I got home I needed to take stuff from my wives car & put it in the Volvo. I forgot the Volvo was locked , I had to put the stuff down , go into the house to get the Volvo guys. All the while I had my phone in my pocket.

I don’t know anything about this stuff , but the guy in the video said if your car is keyless it will work with an iPhone .

But comfort access, where you don't need to plip the key fob, has been around for donkeys years (since the 2002 *closes Wiki*)!

I'd say I'm as likely to lose my keys as I am my phone though, so that wouldn't bother me personally. Also, if you use Volvo connect, the car sort of is already on your phone.

I don't think it's crazy, just not overly useful at the moment given I need to carry keys anyway - until the whole house goes keyless

Why didn’t you open it with VOC?

My iPhone and Apple watch both unlock my car with VOC, not sure how more convenient you can make it really?

Tbh I had forgotten about it , plus I would have to get my phone on , go into a folder & then open the app then press open . It would be quicker to go in the house & get the keys anyway.
