Tailgate pinch sensor
Apologies for posting in the wong forum twice. Having been trying to get to the bottom of my tailgate close button not working I have now noticed that the left hand pinch sensor is missing leaving two bare one white and one black wires at the hinge end. VIDA code says pinch sensor short. Can I short this to get the tailgate button to work without replacing the sensor? Will the code go away or will it need reset? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I had the same question myself a while back as my button was not working either. I never got to try it but it might be worth a shot. What is the worst that can happen?
The sensor can't be that complex...either it prevents a tailgate close when the circuit is open OR when it is closed. Now that you've been able to locate the two bare wires, I'm going to guess that it only prevents closure if the circuit is open...so...give it a go - join the black and white and see what happens! Hang on though - the pinch sensor connects at the bottom of the tailgate (in behind the taillight assembly) and then is routed upwards from there along the edge. If you only see wires at the top, I'm not sure you are looking at the right thing. The pinch sensor runs all the way down the side of each side of the tailgate - It looks just like a regular rubber weather stripping but if you press it with you fingers while the tailgate is being closed it will immediately pop back up.

Thanks very much for your reply. The pinch strip on the RHS is fully intact and is just as you described. The one on the left is just missing and at the top where it meets the hinge end of the tailgate there are the two wires I talked about. It looks like the strip may have become detached and to stop it flapping around the previous owner has just removed it leaving the wires which must have originally extended into the strip. I am wary about joining the wires together in case I blow something. Any further thoughts?

Hmm, alright, I sort of see what you mean but I'm confused because the strip should just end at the corner near the hinge. If there are wires there I'm not sure they are for the pinch-strip. I have a spare pinch-strip at home - I'll take a picture to show you what I mean.

Hello I've checked and your description is correct. I'm still concerned about joining the wires though!

I would not bother...I think you will find that either a) those wires are not connected to anything any longer and/or b) they don't relate to the pinch strip itself. Looks like you need a new pinch strip - pretty sure that will fix your problem.

In case it helps here are three pics of the tailgate pinch sensor before installation. The connector end is at the bottom and ends up plugging in behind the bottom of the taillight assembly. As you can see the top end is simply a rubber end with no wiring connecting to hinge or other. Now, mine is a 2010 v70 (P3) so I'm going with the assumption that your set up is the same...maybe it is not???

Very interesting thanks. I've enclosed images of what mine looks like. I tried joining the wires but the close button still didn't work. I'm guessing I need to clear the fault code as well? What do you think?

Hmmm I'm not sure that clearing the fault would make a difference. It is very likely though that you cannot close due to the broken pinch sensor. I would throw a new one in there and I bet your button will work once more.
