Smile ETM Failed

Well at 142000 miles the original white label ETM failed on my 1999 V70R, took it off and delivered it to Lucas (spokokoluzic - http://volvodiagnostic.com/shop/index.php ) as he's only 15 miles away.
Unfortunatley when tested it was the circuit board that had gone, for a small additional fee Lucas sourced a replacement and modified it to non contact level and then came out to my house to program the unit to my car.
Refitted and the car is perfect again, cannot recommend Lucas enough, for a fraction of what Volvo charge I can drive anywhere without the fear of the contacts wearing.
If you any ETM problem I can recommend giving Lucas a call.

John

I am sure this is a good service but actually you cannot count it as being 100% reliable. The reason for this is that the contactless system only employs one sensor, whereas the original has two and the ECU makes a comparison between them. Ex-modex in the states operates a similar service to Lucus and these have been known to fail/give rise to problems too. Out of interest, what did it cost? Ex-modex is north of $500 but very quick about two days I think (send away - remanufacture). The new Bosh replacement for the original Megnetti Marelli is also contactless.

Some people change the unit themselves before it gives trouble. Here is one source of the part.

I ducked out when I recently serviced my PCV system, because it requires fine soldering old (possibly corroded) contacts and my unit was replaced 18 months ago.
