Belt should be double sided, 6 grooves on both sides, sounds as though you have single sided?
The contitech I have on the engine now is double sided with 6 ribs on each side.
But on the outer side ( the side you can see going over the steering pump pulley for instance) it seems to have some polyester coat/ cover. But that side is hard as the other side that shows the rubber. I'm pretty sure that the belt structure is mainly rubber.

For what I've read online, the belt manufactures are making belts like this to eliminate noises. I don't like it because as such you never know by visual inspection if there's any signs of wear on the belt ( cracks, shine).

Cheers

I've changed the serpentine belt as the one in the car when bought was cracked and noisy. Tensioner also replaced.

Went to a Contitech 6DPK1841. 6 ribs and 1841 of length. comparing with the previous belt the most obvious detail is that the contitech one has one side rubber, the other is a kind of polyester. the original was rubber both sides.

The belt is silent, but i'm experiencing, as not before that much, an almost total loss of power steering assistance when the engine gets hot after a drive. It also depends of the day temperature (the hottter, the greater the loss of power steering assistance). When engine is cold, power steering is fine.

With everything else being ok (oil level, pump, rack), I would assume that the belt must be slipping due to increasing length with temperature and steering pump load.

So my questions are: is this a good thing for the belt to have one side made of polyester; and was 1841 the correct length for the belt?

I've checked again online and it appears that there’s a Meyle version of this belt with both sides made of rubber, 6 ribs and 1825 of length. Gates also does a version but again, just like the contitech, also has a polyester side.

Not finding any other belt length between this 1825 and the 1841, i guess that the former would be the next shorter length for a serpentine belt of the same profile (6 ribs) for a d5 engine. Or not?

Please let me know your thoughts and experience.

Cheers
I just went through the same ordeal. In my case it was because I replaced my XC70 power steering pulley with a smaller pulley from the XC90. i was curious to see how much smoother my steering would feel. At first I tried using the same belt (1841) and it was too long. IT would run but there was just a sliver too much slack and it resulted in the tensioner clicking against the engine bracket which while minor, was a very annoying noise.

I then ordered a conti 1825 - which honestly is the same belt in all respects (rubber on both sides) except that it is ever so slightly shorter and put back the correct amount of tension on the tensioner. At some point in 2005-ish they went with one size for the power steering pump (the smaller size). From that point forward all vehicles went with the 1825. Easy way to check your ps pulley: if it measures 14.2cm in dia, it's the original vs. of the pulley and you should go with 1841. If it measures 13cm you will need the 1825. Not sure if this helps.

Checked earlier today what I used last time - 1838 on the 2003 euro 3, 1825 on the 2007 euro 4.
