Default Private reg plate, advice

Hi,

My gran has come to the end of her driving life and now needs to sell her car which has a private plate on it, she has the original registration plates from when she bought the car, her plan is to sell her private reg separatly as it will no longer be needed,
Can anyone advise how we need to go about getting the car back registerd on its orignal plates.

Thanks, Craig.

It’s so easy these days. You will put it on retention using that link above for about £85. You need to reassign it to another car within 10 years or you lose the reg.

Make sure you have the new plates with you (usually the original reg number) as you can put them on straight away.

I don’t think you can just put it back on the original plates once you have put the personal plate onto retention. DVLA will issue an age related registration mark for the vehicle which you will then have to get plates made up before doing anything else. The original registration mark reverted to Dvla when the personal plate was assigned to that vehicle

Normally, the original registration mark is assigned back to the vehicle. It's complicated enough following a history of a personalised plate when it has been transferred across several vehicles, without having their original marks transferred as well

Take a private number off a vehicle

You can take a private (personalised) number off a vehicle if you want to either:

keep the number to use later
assign it to another vehicle

The vehicle’s original registration number is usually reassigned to it automatically when you take off a private number.

That's what happened to mine. I then fitted my personal plate and put the original plates in the attic ready for when the car moves on.
